Mmmmm meat.

One of the perks of writing this community newsletter is that I’ve become acutely aware of all the new food spots that appear in Orléans. And that’s a good thing, because I’m always looking for new places to eat. So, when something like a new deli sandwich shop pops up nearby, it’s music to my ears, or rather, a dampening of hunger grumbles to my stomach?

Gabagool Ottawa has very recently opened and is located at 1675 Tenth Line Rd, right next to Bite Burger. Designed as a deli-counter that’s only open Monday to Saturday between the hours of 11:00am to 3:00pm, Gabagool fills a niche in the Orleans food landscape that is surprisingly barren. It sits in the same category as another over-the-counter, take-out-only, lunch place, Lunchbox which we reviewed this past spring.

THE FOOD

Gabagool offers a good variety of deli sandwiches with a mix of meat-filled and vegetarian options. You’ll find everything from a meat and cheese heavy sandwich, to an egg or chicken salad laden sandwich to something a bit more spicy like their Spicy Goumah, which features a variety of spicy meats and cheeses on a Portuguese bun.

Once you’ve chosen your base sandwich you can then fill it with a variety of toppings, most of which are veggies like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, olives, banana peppers, pickles and sauces like mayo, Gabagol sauce, hot garlic, French mustard, and others.

There’s also a small variety snacks like pasta and potato salad, cream of broccoli soup, kettle chips and more.

You can see their full menu here.

WHAT I HAD

  • The Boss sandwich 8.5 / 10

  • Potato salad - 8 / 10

Both the sandwich and potato salad scored above my expectations, though I have to admit, I would have loved the option to have my sandwich be grilled warm. But that’s just not the Italian way is it? Nevertheless, all the ingredients were fresh, tasty, and the meat was simply excellent. Of note is the generous amount of meat that was served with this particular sandwich (The Boss).

The potato salad was nearly as good with fresh and creamy mayo along with crispy green onions.

THE ORLÉANS CONNECT RATING

⭐️ 4.5 stars out of 5

While I’m yet to try other items on their menu, if what I had is an indicator of the quality of the rest of the menu, it’s going to be a big winner amongst Orléans residents looking for a high-quality deli-counter. I for one am very happy to have a new lunch spot option available that serves relatively healthy lunches with plentiful variety and generous portions.

Also of note is that despite being quite busy when I got there around 12:30pm, the sandwich makers made quick work of orders and the lineup of people waiting to make their purchases moved quite quickly. Welcome to Orléans Gabagool!
