Hello ORLÉANS!

Welcome to the 36th edition of Orléans Connect.

Ok, I’m going to come out and say it, it’s too early for snow! ❄️ Our city is famously known for its long and cold winters, but that was quite the rude start to the wintery season, was it not?

Don’t believe me? According to weather records, Nov 9th was the first 5 cm of snow for the season, the typical first is around November 24th. Even worse, it was also Ottawa’s first 10cm snow of the season, which is the earliest since Nov 10, 1997! Oh, and it also happened to be the snowiest Nov 9th in more than 100 years…so… yay?! 🥶☃️

Did you catch the Northern Lights on Tuesday night? If you missed them, check out some of the phenomenal photos by local photographers in the Petrie Island: Our Small Wilderness Facebook group!

This week we’ve got a new Orléans Food Spot Review - a spot that’s perfect for catching a game 🏒 and getting down with some excellent pub food and craft beer. 🍺 Check that out below.👇

Also… don’t forget to check out this week’s poll ❓ at the bottom of the newsletter. This week we’re asking: Was it too early for this much snow? Inquiring minds want to know in order to settle a bet in our home 😉

As usual, here’s what’s happening in Orléans over the next seven days: ⬇️

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT 🔦

This week’s Orléans business spotlight is… 🥁 CORNER BAR & GRILL located at 1779 Tenth Line Road.

The Corner Bar & Grill is an all-craft Beer House that doubles as a terrific neighbourhood pub with a fantastically sized menu and food, as we discovered in this week’s Orléans Food Spot Spot Review, that’s quite excellent.

As always, if you wind up eating or ordering from there, make sure to tell them that Orléans Connect sent you.

Continuing the theme of weather this week, did you know that with 11cm of snow cover on Nov 10th of this year, it was Ottawa’s deepest Nov 10th since records of such things began in 1955? Well, now you know. And also, now there’s snow on the ground. Enjoy not seeing your grass for another 5 months or so. 🥴

Many thanks to Brianne M. for sending in a photo of Daisy, a gorgeous 2 year-old pup recently adopted from It Takes a Village Dog Rescue. Daisy’s job now? Being super sweet and growing up alongside her human toddler companion.

THIS WEEK’S POLL ❓

📊 Results of last week’s poll: What do you think of the Province of Ontario banning 🚗 speed cameras? 📷

  • 🥇 Booooo! - it will make streets less safe and crush municipal revenue - 78%

  • 🥈 Yay! - No more speeding tickets - 13%

  • 🥉 Meh - don’t really have an opinion or feel strongly either way - 9%

Here’s a selection of comments we got with last week’s poll from our readers, thanks for your feedback everyone, clearly a hot button issue!

“The money has already been spent to manufacture, install and operationalize the existing cameras, which are working to ensure the safety of our children and really work in changing behaviour - there are fewer people who speed. Why start from scratch by dismantling these and spending new money on other measures that will not be as effective. Let the cameras continue to operate and spend the money on something else. Thank you. ”

“There are too many, in unnecessary locations. I was out on my to Stittsville flea market, and was travelling on a road, a few houses, spaced about. This road was the original highway and ran beside the new one. I was going maybe 10 km above the limit, there were no signs and I was probably the only one on the road. I believe there should be some thought put into where they put them, maybe give someone a first warning like a police would do if he stopped you; or if you get a lot of tickets, then you deserve them, 10 kms over.”

“This is none other than a Doug Ford move to reel people in to re-elect him, at the cost of the damage this will do. It makes no sense whatsoever.”

“I'm not sure they were highly effective. Everyone I saw would slam on the brakes right before the camera and then speed up again once past it. ”
