Tucked into a strip mall on Innes Road in Orleans, Moose McGuire's Pub & Grill might not look like a lot from the outside, but step through the door and you're immediately transported into one of the most character-rich sports bars in Ottawa's east end. The space is massive, split across several distinct zones: a long, centrally-placed bar that anchors the entire room, a dining area loaded with pub tables and bar stools, a dedicated dart room, and a back section that opens up beautifully for live events.

THE LOCATION

The decor leans hard into Canadian sports nostalgia, and it works wonderfully. Framed NHL jerseys line the walls: Messier, Clark, Parros, Sakic, Iginla, alongside vintage sports memorabilia, neon signs, and an upturned Molson Canadian canoe hanging from the ceiling. It's the kind of place where hockey fans feel immediately at home and newcomers are won over by the sheer personality of the room.

The entertainment offerings are also unique for a neighbourhood pub. There's a Guitar Hero arcade cabinet commanding attention near the entrance, and not one but four pinball machines: Godzilla, Avengers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Jaws, tucked into the back. Add in a dedicated dart room with multiple boards, a digital jukebox, and a large projection screen for events, and you've got a place that's as much entertainment venue as it is restaurant. Regular programming includes open mic nights, trivia Tuesdays, comedy nights, and live bands.

THE MENU

Moose McGuire's menu covers all the expected pub-grub territory, but with enough house-made touches to lift it above the average bar menu. Burgers are made from ½-pound ground sirloin on a pretzel bun, sandwiches come with a side salad or fries, and the mains section features crowd-pleasers alongside some genuinely interesting options like the McGuire's Yorkies, mini Yorkshire puddings stuffed with brisket and horseradish mayo.

Reviewers consistently rave about the wings on Wednesday night, the fish & chips (beer-battered haddock with in-house slaw), and the Big Kahuna burger with pineapple and teriyaki sauce. The poutine uses squeaky fresh cheese curds, and the nachos are loaded to the point of generosity. Prices are fair for Ottawa, ranging from around $8 for a side of fresh-cut fries up to $27 for the chicken souvlaki plate.

BRUNCH BUFFET: ALMOST A GRAND SLAM

We visited Moose McGuire's for their special Easter brunch buffet. The spread was generous and genuinely appealing: scrambled eggs, crispy hash browns, Belgian-style waffles, thick-cut ham, bacon, assorted cheeses, and a fresh fruit medley of cantaloupe, honeydew, and orange.

The scrambled eggs were excellent, fluffy, well-seasoned, and cooked exactly right, which is rarer than it should be at a buffet. The waffles had good golden colour and a satisfying crisp exterior. Standout detail: they use real Canadian maple syrup, served in individual ramekins, a small touch that speaks to a kitchen that cares about doing things properly.

The one stumble: the breakfast sausages were noticeably overcooked when we were there, bordering on burnt on the underside. It's not a dealbreaker for an otherwise well-executed buffet, but it's worth noting, and honestly consistent with occasional feedback from other reviewers who've mentioned inconsistency in certain cooked items. Everything else on the plate held up well, and the overall value for a sit-down brunch in Ottawa's east end is hard to beat. It’s one of the highest bang-for-your-buck brunches we’ve had anywhere in Orléans.

THE ORLÉANS CONNECT OVERALL RATING

⭐️ 4.4 stars out of 5

Moose McGuire's Orléans is exactly the kind of neighbourhood pub that Ottawa's east end deserves: spacious, unpretentious, stuffed with Canadian sports character, and genuinely fun to spend time in. The brunch buffet is a solid weekend outing, the beer selection punches well above the typical bar, and the sheer breadth of entertainment (pinball, Guitar Hero, darts, live events, trivia nights) makes it easy to lose an afternoon here. For Orleans locals especially, this is a rare find: a place with real personality that earns its return visits.
