Orléans Food Spot Review - Markie's Montreal Smoked Meat

Last year, Markie’s Montreal Smoked Meat expanded to their third Ottawa location, which happens to be almost right across the street from Boston Pizza along Innes Rd. Their arrival was cheered by Montreal-smoked-meat fiends like myself. So it was time to check out this beloved sandwich place and see if they measure up to the ridiculously high-praise reviews found across practically every online review I could scope out.

THE SPACE

Markie’s is located in the old building housing “The Kitchen Guy’s” kitchen and bathroom remodelling business, and from what I can see, they made extensive changes to the building, including the build-out of a significantly sized patio that faces Innes road.

On the inside, you’ll find a counter, and a decent amount of seating, but I can see how this place fills up quick in the non-patio months of the year and the seating can probably accommodate maybe a total of 15 people or so.

But being that Markie’s is a sandwich shop primarily, I’m sure that the vast majority of people take their meals to go. On the other hand, the patio is lovely. It’s new, spacious, has tons of seating, and is well maintained. Bonus points for having large umbrellas at each table to keep the sun’s rays at bay as well as a wheelchair accessible ramp.

THE MENU

Markie’s is first and foremost a sandwich shop, and they offer a variety of combo platters that offer a nice selection of meals for almost anyone's preference.

Sandwich types include:

• Montreal smoked meat

• Reuben

• Club Sandwich (Chicken)

• Club Roll platter

• Canadian burger

• Fish & Chips

• Buffalo Chicken Wrap

Each combo platter offers your choice of poutine, onion rings, spring rolls. They also offer stand-alone poutine plates, sides, and a small selection of deserts consisting of cherry cheesecake, Black Forest cake, and chocolate cake.

The kids menus consists of one item: 5 chicken strips and fries. You can see the entire menu here.

WHAT I HAD

I had Combo # 1 which is:

• Huge sandwich (8 oz)

• Fries

• Coleslaw

• 1 Drink

Easily the best Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich I’ve had in years. The meat almost melts in your mouth, it’s that tender and delicious. Absolutely awesome sandwich, that is, if you’re the type of person that loves meat. The fries were excellent also, and make sure to ask for gravy with them, also pretty outstanding.
