Tucked away in Orléans, Ontario, La Ha Tacos is a food truck, technically a trailer, that's hard to miss once you spot it. The bold, vibrant orange wrap is eye-catching from a distance, emblazoned with the truck's taco-shaped logo and their tagline: "Hand Made, Fresh, Local." It's a compact setup, but the outdoor picnic tables give it a casual, welcoming feel that's perfect for a sunny afternoon lunch.

THE LOCATION

There's something charming about eating tacos outside in the sunshine, and La Ha leans right into that energy. The truck itself is clean and well-maintained, and a little detail that I loved, a cute illustrated taco character sticker wearing a "Hello, My Name Is La Ha" badge on the side of the truck. It's a small touch, but it tells you that the people running this operation have a sense of fun and personality. The vibe is relaxed, neighbourhood-friendly, and unpretentious.

THE MENU

La Ha Tacos keeps things focused but offers more variety than you might expect from a food truck. The main menu is mounted right on the side of the trailer for easy reading while you wait. Tacos are the star of the show, served as a set of three corn tortillas with standard toppings, and priced between $16.50 for veggie up to $21.50 for steak or birria. Options include chicken, pork, pork belly, fish (haddock), and salmon, though salmon was marked as sold out on my visit, which tells you the popular items move quickly.

Beyond tacos, they offer nachos and salads, both customizable with your choice of protein and toppings. The extras section has some genuinely tempting sides: chips and salsa, queso cheese sauce, and street corn. The drinks menu is a highlight in itself: La Ha serves homemade horchata, agua de sandia, agua de flor de Jamaica, imported Mexican Coke, Jarritos, and bottled water. Prices are fair and in line with what you'd expect from a quality food truck in the Ottawa area.

A separate specials board outside the truck rounded out the offerings with some creative items on the day of my visit: Birria Ramen for $10, a Shrimp Taco for $18.50, a La Ha S'more (graham crackers, marshmallow, milk chocolate, and dulce de leche) for $5, a La Ha Fruit Salad for $9, and a side of guacamole. The specials board alone is reason enough to check in regularly. This is clearly a kitchen that enjoys experimenting.

THE FOOD

I ordered the Chicken Tacos ($18.50), which come with avocado, pickled onions, queso fresco, lime, and cilantro, I asked for no onions, and they had no trouble accommodating the request. The order arrived with a generous side of corn tortilla chips and a small container of their signature fire-roasted salsa.

Let's start with that salsa. It was outstanding, one of the best I've had in a long time. It had a real depth of flavour with a smoky, roasted quality that elevated everything it touched. It didn't feel like an afterthought; it tasted like something they're actually proud of, and rightfully so.

The chips themselves were excellent too, thick, well-seasoned corn tortilla chips with just the right amount of crunch. They held up well against the salsa and didn't feel like a filler side. The combination of those chips with that salsa alone would be worth a return visit.

The tacos were beautifully presented, loaded with juicy, well-seasoned grilled chicken, crema drizzled generously across the top, queso fresco crumbled over everything, corn salsa adding sweetness and texture, and fresh cilantro and avocado rounding it all out. The flavour combination was excellent and clearly thought out. Every component had a purpose.

My one mild criticism was the corn tortillas. They were soft and authentic, and I completely understand why La Ha uses them, they're the traditional choice and pair beautifully with the fillings. But they are on the softer, more delicate side, and I personally found myself wishing there was an option for a hard shell. That said, that's a personal preference, and I'll admit I didn't think to ask if it was possible. It's a minor note on an otherwise strong dish.

To wash it all down, I had a Mexican Coca-Cola, the real thing, made with cane sugar and served in a glass bottle, imported from Mexico and listed right there on the menu for $4.50. If you've never had a Mexican Coke, it tastes noticeably different from the North American version: cleaner, crisper, and somehow more satisfying. The fact that La Ha carries it is a small but meaningful detail that shows they care about the full experience.

⭐️ 4.5 stars out of 5

La Ha Tacos is exactly the kind of local food truck that deserves a loyal following. The food is fresh, handmade, and flavourful, the specials menu shows creativity, and small touches: the Mexican Coke, the fire-roasted salsa, the charming branding, signal that this is a food project done right. The price point is reasonable for the quality, and the outdoor seating makes it a great spot to linger on a nice day.

Whether you're an Orléans local looking for something a cut above the usual lunch options, or someone willing to make the drive for a genuinely good taco, La Ha Tacos is well worth your time. I'll be back, and next time, I might just ask about those taco shells.
