The first thing to know about Creative Stir is that they are in-fact in the same space that the now-defunct and much-beloved Art of Bean Coffee shop was once housed in. But Creative Stir has taken up its mantle and is now off and running with a terrific offering.

THE LOCATION

Creative Stir Cafe is one of those rare finds that makes you do a double-take the moment you step inside. Equal parts coffee shop and art gallery, a collaboration with The Niche Ottawa Gallery, the space has an energy that feels like it was airlifted straight out of a side street in downtown Toronto or Montreal's Mile End. Urban, warm, and unmistakably creative.

Don't be fooled by the exterior: the inside is bigger than you'd expect. A front seating area flows into a more expansive back section, making it ideal for a cozy date, a catch-up with friends, or a solo afternoon with a book. Exposed concrete walls, warm wooden beams, and Edison-style pendant lighting give it that perfectly curated industrial-cozy feel. It’s the kind of place where you immediately want to slow down.

Every surface tells a story. Handmade ceramics line the shelves alongside prints, earrings, glass art, and local books (keep an eye out for The Ninth Forsvar by Dyment on the window display). A striking sgraffito-carved ceramic plate featuring birds and swirling waves catches your eye near the window, and nearby, whimsical lino prints of carnivorous plants and glass snail figurines with their own little personality cards sit waiting to find a home. The artwork rotates and is all for sale, so if something catches your eye, don't wait too long.

One of the most charming touches: a teal-painted wall decorated with a Mary Oliver quote assembled from Scrabble tiles: "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one precious and wild life?", surrounded by hand-painted swirls. It sets the tone for the whole place: thoughtful, artsy, alive.

THE MENU

The chalkboard menu is a work of art in itself — hand-lettered with personality and organized into sections that reward exploration.

Coffee covers all the classics, priced accessibly: drip coffee starts at $2.95, espresso and americano at $3.59, a flat white at $5.35, and lattes and cappuccinos at $5.49–$5.95. Syrup upgrades (vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, mocha) are just 70¢, and dairy-free milk alternatives: oat, lactose-free, and soy, are available for $1.00 extra.

Hot Drinks venture beyond coffee into a lovely chai latte ($5.79–$6.25), a matcha latte described as "lush, calm, vibrant, grounding" ($5.90–$6.39), London Fog ($6.29), and a hot chocolate billed as "decadent, rich, creamy & luxurious" ($4.39–$5.25). There's even a Kiddos Cocoa ($2.90), a sweet touch for families.

The Tea Potions section ($3.25) is where things get genuinely interesting: chamomile, lemongrass, moringa mint, turmeric ginger, blueberry white peony, sakura rose, rooibos chai, Jazz-min, Sencha Kyoto, a globe-trotting selection that coffee skeptics will deeply appreciate.

For cold drinks, the Make it Iced section includes creative house specials: Sunshine on the Water (iced tea, peach, apricot, raspberry, vanilla: $5.44), Lemon & Lavender Breeze ($5.39), and Strawberry Fields Forever (iced tea with fresh mint and strawberry notes: $5.39).

Eats & Sammies round out the menu with unpretentious, solid options: avocado toast ($8.95), a deli turkey club ($10.35), ham & cheese ($9.35), cheesy melt ($7.99), and a simple toasted tomato ($5.95). Most can be made gluten-free for an extra $1.95.

THE FOOD & COFFEE

The lattes arrive in beautifully handmade ceramic cups, yellow with indigo spiral motifs, and the latte art is genuinely lovely, with a classic tulip pour sitting atop a rich, well-steamed flat. These aren't just vessels; they feel like part of the experience, a nod to the gallery's ethos that even your morning coffee should be aesthetically considered.

On weekends, the pastry case gets a serious upgrade: during our visit, they were stocking Mavericks Donuts, and they did not disappoint. A sugar-dusted beauty with a generous caramel drizzle and a dense, doughy interior sat alongside a chunky glazed option studded with fruit and chocolate. Both were indulgent without being over-the-top, and they paired perfectly with the smooth, well-balanced lattes. If Mavericks donuts are still on when you visit, don't hesitate.
