A quick note, we are still on our short summer break, so today’s edition of the newsletter will be an abbreviated one. In the meantime enjoy a photo we snapped on the night sky in Barry’s Bay. We’ll be back to our usual full edition next week. In the meantime, we’ll be paddleboarding, swimming and getting all of our cottage time in!

🎡 Aug 6th - 9th The annual Navan Fair is here! This classical rural country fair features midway rides, agricultural and livestock exhibitions, live concerts, demolition derbies, tractor pulls, and so much more!

🎶 August 7th - Orléans Unplugged, a free outdoor music series bringing local talent, community vibes and laid-back summer evenings - every Friday from 6-8 PM.

🎨 August 7th - It’s Paint Nite at Moose McGuire’s! Family-friendly Paint and Sip night, from 7-9 PM. Paint Colourful Petals - a rainbow-coloured daisy with multicoloured petals. All supplies included. Great for ages 6 and up. Get your tickets online.

🎤 August 7th - It’s Karaoke Night at the Orléans Legion! On from 7-11 PM. Grab the mic, sing your favourite songs and cheer on your friends.

🏃🏾‍♀️ August 8th - Join the Orléans Women’s Run Club at Café Latte Cino at 8 AM for warm-up. 5 KM run, all paces welcome. Post run, enjoy a coffee at the café with the group!

⚽ August 8th - Free Women’s 30+ Recreational Soccer Scrimmages! If you’re looking for a fun, welcoming group to play soccer with, join for these 9v9 scrimmages, on from 9:30-11 AM, every Saturday. 🌭 August 8th - Soap Ladz is hosting a Community BBQ and Market at Millennium Park from 11 AM - 3 PM. Shop local vendors, enjoy awesome music and great food! There will be an inflatable bounce house and slide. Get your face painted or Henna Tattoos. BBQ available at low cost - Halal burgers and hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy and drinks.

🐕 August 8th - Fetch Local Night Market is on from 4-9 PM! This open air, dog-friendly evening market features 40 local vendors, including some fantastic local food and drink favourites!

🪿 August 9th - Shorebird Walk - learn to identify Petrie Island’s common shorebirds from a local biologist and volunteer, from 9-10 AM. Registration required.

☕ August 9th - Convent Glen Orléans Wood Community Association is hosting their weekly Community Café at Voyageurs Park, from 9:30 - 11 AM. Hang out with your neighbours, have free coffee and baked treats.

🐢 August 9th - Friends of Petrie Island are hosting an Open House. Explore the incredible flora and fauna of Petrie Island through interactive booths, hands-on activities, live turtle hatchlings and fun for all ages! Drop by anytime from 10 AM - 2 PM.

🩶 August 11th - Ottawa School of Art and Cynosure Jewelry are hosting a Jewelry Making Workshop. Learn how to make a silver meditation ring (also called spinner or fidget rings). Workshop from 5:30-9 PM. Registration fee is $205 (plus tax) - all jewelry-making tools and supplies provided. No experience necessary! Register here.

🫜 The Heart of Orléans Night Market & Movie Night is on Sat, Aug 15th from 6-10 PM. The Navan Boot Scootin’ Line Dancing will be offering a 45-min class (starting at 7 PM), followed by 45-mins of just dancing. The movie will be PG13 and will begin around 9-9:15 PM.
☀️ The Greater Avalon Community Association (GACA) is hosting their Annual Summer Fest on Sat, Aug 15th from 10 AM - 2 PM. Bring the family for a fun-filled day featuring inflatables, community fun and summer vibes. Celebrate Ottawa’s 200th Anniversary with your neighbours!
🎥 Cardinal Creek Community Association is hosting Movie Night in the Park at Glandriel Park on Sat, Aug 22nd at 7 PM.

Business spotlight will return next week…

Orléans features several notable connections to early Hollywood cinema and modern popular culture. The most prominent of which involves Eugenie Besserer (1868-1934), a pioneering silent film actress.

Many thanks to Liz M, R. for submitting Miss Lucy, a very animated, cuddly Potcake who comes all the way from Antigua. She’s settled into Orléans quite nicely and loves exploring on her walks.
